EURO 2012 LIVE: Germany 4, Greece 2 in quarterfinal clash at Euro 2012

In the second quarterfinal at Euro 2012, Germany plays Greece on Friday. Here’s the best of the action and match-day excitement. All times are local to Poland.
Germany advances to the semifinals and rightly so, despite the best efforts of Greece, especially in the second half. Philipp Lahm gave Germany the lead in a dominant performance in the opening 45 minutes before Samaras levelled it for Greece after the break with a shock goal. A brilliant volley from Khedira gave Germany the lead again before Klose made sure with a header. Reus volleyed in to rival teammate Khedira for goal of the game before a late Salpigidis penalty meant Greece exit the tournament with their pride intact.
Germany 4, Greece 2.

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson likely to skip British Open as his wife is due to give birth in late July British Open begins July 19 at Royal Lytham and St. Annes

Webb Simpson picks up his first major championship when he won the U.S. Open at Olympic Club last week.

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson says he’ll likely skip the upcoming British Open, and the decision will be an easy one.

Family comes first.

Simpson’s wife, Dowd, is due to give birth to the couple’s second child in late July, and he says he plans to be home in North Carolina with her when that happens.

“We haven’t made any official decisions because we’re going to go to the doctor next week and get an up-to-date projection on the baby,” Simpson said Friday after his second round at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. “What I said about not going, it’s just a probably. It’s not looking likely that I’ll be able to go that far.”

The Open begins July 19 at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in Lancashire, England, and Simpson said his wife is no longer cleared to travel with him.

“I’m a guy who loves my family, and we’re probably only going to have a couple of more babies,” Simpson said earlier this week. “I have the rest of my life to play the British Open,”

Simpson called witnessing the birth of his first son, 16-month-old James, one of the greatest experiences of his life. He had another special moment last week, winning the first major golf championship of his career, but said even that wasn’t enough to tempt him to get on a plane to England.

“After winning, it’s certainly a little harder not to go, because I’d love to go and try to win another major,” he said. “But in the grand scheme of things, in the grand scheme of life, it’s a decision that I know that I’ll always be happy that I made.”

Simpson calls himself a “people pleaser” and says he’s is still trying to get used to all the new demands on his time after his win at Olympic. He turned down several opportunities this week to appear on late-night talk shows, because of other commitments, and said he’s learning to prioritize.

Why Always Ronaldo?

Cristiano Ronaldo finally found the form he was lacking at the European Championship, scoring twice Sunday to give Portugal a 2-1 win over the ,Netherlands and a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Real Madrid forward failed to sparkle in Portugal's two previous matches but he was devastating against the Dutch. He produced an equalizer with his first goal of the tournament in the 28th minute and scored the winner in the 74th.

"Once again we showed how united we are as a team," Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso said. "It wasn't easy to start with a defeat. The secret was our defending, our humility."

Needing a win to have a chance at staying in the tournament, the disappointing Dutch fielded an impressive attacking lineup featuring Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Robin van Persie up front, but it wasn't enough to keep them at Euro 2012.

The Dutch lost in the World Cup final to Spain two years ago and, with stars like Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder, had anticipated a strong run at Euro 2012.

Joachim Loew insists Germany will get better at Euro 2012

Joachim Loew says there is more to come from his side after Mario Gomez justified the German coach's decision to start with the striker.
Bayern Munich's Gomez headed the winner in the 1-0 win over Portugal in their opening Group B game just as he was about to be replaced by Miroslav Klose.
"Gomez has lots of different qualities - one chance, one goal," said Loew.

"The important thing was to win. The European Championship is like a Formula One race but without a warm-up."
Germany were heading for a frustrating goalless draw when Gomez headed the 72nd-minute winner to leave Portugal needing to avoid defeat against Denmark in their next game on 13 June.
Lazio frontman Klose - scorer of 14 World Cup goals - has been struggling with a thigh injury in the build-up to the tournament, meaning Gomez got the nod up front.
"I spoke with Miro," Loew added. "He still needs maybe a few per cent at this moment. He hasn't played for quite a while in the preparation.
"They both trained really well but Gomez has been playing for the whole season, scoring lots of goals."
Gomez, 26, has become used to being behind Klose in the pecking order, but hopes his winner will secure him a regular place in Loew's starting plans.
"I have two successful seasons behind me but it was a hard road," he said.
"I am very happy that the coach had confidence in me and with the goal I could pay something back."
Loew promised there was more to come from the three-times world champions, but felt the important thing was to start with the win.
"You have to be ready straight away because every team is incredibly strong," he said.
